Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle

I am going to make sure there is no air leak on the fuel supply side, so here is what I have ordered.

0174404 PULSE LIMITER
0320107 TIE STRAP 40
0322652 CLAMP 16
0322654 CLAMP, Filter & connector 8
0331841 SIGHT TUBE, Oil 1
0332851 PULSE HOSE 2
0333381 HOSE, Connector to filter 1
0333446 HOSE, Pump to manifold 2
0395540 FUEL MANIFOLD ASSY. 1
0398549 FUEL CONN., HOSE, & PRIMER BULB ASSY.. Not Shown 1

Also I am going to have to purchase some fuel line in the different sizes.
Can I use standard automotive fuel line or is outboard fuel line different?

Thanks
Dave

Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle

Update:
I purchased a new tank to engine fuel line, decarbed the engine with Deep Creep sitting in the cylinders overnight. Put the engine in a tank and actually got it to idle, both in gear and out. It seems to have a small miss, or stumble while idling. Cancelled the ordered for the parts, I wanted to see if the new fuel line from the tank would help and it did. I am going to run it on the lake this week and see how it does. Then I think I will try to chase down is air leak in the fuel. So far I am really happy. This is a great site that has helped me out millions. Without it I would have been spending lots of money to rebuild this engine; doing the wrong thing when all it needed was a little TLC. I will keep you updated on how it is doing. I definetly want to get rid of my 2006 Merc now.

if you still have a miss check your ignition spark, weak spark can cause a miss, let us know how the lake run turns out.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle

Ok here is an update. I had the boat out on the water this week, and it started, idled and came up to WOT great. But now I am noticing that the engine is taking off from time to time, like after I come out of WOT or off the throttle. It is like the throttle cable is stilling or lagging being the movement of the handle. Much like a delay. What I was finding would work is to lift the fast idle up and down really quick and the idle would come back down to normal. Plus I think that I need to bring the idle down a little.
Any thoughts??

link n sync

sounds like one of your butterfly is off a little.

This is not a hard procedure but must be followed step by step thoroughly.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle (Update)

It has been a while since I updated on the status of the boat.
I have had it out on the lake at least 6-7 times since the last posting. It starts (takes it a minute or two) and idles when cold, and runs WOT great, but still has some issues. After a run, and warming up, it doesnt want to stay idling; like when I am loading the boat on the trailer, and anytime I have to put the boat in reverse. When shifting from forward to reverse, I have to give the engine lots of throttle to keep it from dying. Also after a run, and I start the engine back up, I have to keep the fast idle up until right before shifting into gear. Like a fast shift. I dont like to do this, I dont believe that this could be good on the lower end.

I did follow the manual on link and sync and it has ran better since, I also try to check the timing accord to the manual. Now here is where I am a little puzzled. I have a standard inductive timing light, I hooked it up to the starting battery, around number 1 plug wire, and squeezing the trigger; NO Light. I have spark arcing across the plug, but I dont know how strong?
Did I connect the timing light wrong. Could my problem be an electrical problem in the ingition system, and what is the best way to check this?
Thanks to everyone for the help.

the boot is suppose to be on the plug. you need to set your idle speed in gear and in the water, that should solve you stalling problem.

Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle UPDATE

Re: 1988 Evinrude 50hp VRO will not idle UPDATE

An update on my 50 Evinrude.
Been using it most of the summer, and it will idle, but the rpms are very high. In fact many times after I throttle down from WOT the engine wants to run on. And on Saturday morning it began to miss on WOT, seems to almost cut out then catch but it would run at a lower RPM. So I decide that I would try and rebuild the carbs again. I followed the manual removed the carbs and started to tear them down. I found them incredibly clean, and all the passages where good an clean. The carb on the top the center pickup looks like it could be bent??? I am sorry about the picture being blurry. The bottom carb on the manifold the pickup was in the center, not touching the outer tube like this one.

Could this be my problem with the idle?

Another question???? what could cause the engine to miss at WOT??
