I have a 28hp 1988 Evinrude, just today out of the blue the starter was just spinning and not lifting to the fly wheel. So the first thing I did was test the battery voltage, well it was under 12. I replaced the batter today with a brand new one just to be sure, wired it up, and turned the key, same thing.... I'v checked all the connections, roughed them up, all look fine... Also I should mention that manually lifting the starter, seems to lock up, I can't lift it to the fly wheel, is that normal? Any ideas?

You might try using a jumper cable and jump directly to the starter, if it works that way, you have excessive voltage drop in the system somewhere. Maybe a battery cable or a starter solenoid. Remember to check the condition of the ground connections also.

So I gave this a try, and got the same result. I knocked on the top of the starter with my wrench and bam, she fired right up. What does this usually mean?

It usually means you have got some grease or other clag on the bendix shaft and the dog is sticking.Make sure the shaft is clean and above all DRY. Any oil or grease attracts dust and affects the operation. Your battery would have to be pretty low for it not to at least try to operate the bendix but of course it does help to have a good one.

Thank you, anyone know any good DIY's on greasing the Bendix? DO I need to remove the starter and open it up to grease it?
