Ok I read in the clymers book how to adjust the timing on my engine. I was going to use the cranking method. Not having a timing tool or dial indicator does anyone know any method to get the piston to tdc? I was thinking of using a small screw driver like the timing tool is used minus the turning into the spark plug hole. But do I need the timing tool to get spot on tdc? Id rather not pull the wag method on the timing after messing with my throttle for a week straight.

To do static timing you don't need any tools other than a timing light and a ground system for the plugs.A small screwdriver will help find TDC.
What's going on that you've been towed in 4X J

Re: 1988 force 85 hp outboard timing question

Well J up until this weekend i was running 1 carb with the main nozzle spring missing the middle carb. I have the late model 85 hp carburetors which have a spring located above the float bowl bolt.Took all 3 carbs off last weekend reset floats and put springs in, I was also missing the air baffle which suprisingly made a big difference in how it starts. Now it starts quick but it seems like running a little rich so Im on the adjusting idle screws step and figured the extra 20 min to set the timing couldnt hurt. And for the timing I have a timing light I should just be able to ground the plugs to the engine block right?
