ok i took all 3 of my carbs off for general mantience. unbolted throttle cam, and turned throttle roller wide open to acess the bolt on bottom carb. put everything back on , chokes synced perfectly, throttle was good too or so i thought. started boat on muffs had no throttle at all in pull out away from gunwale to disengage gear neutral. when i go wide open in gear the carbs opened maybe 3/4 of the way. all 3 equally and easily.if i throttle by hand turning the carb i all 3 carbs open equally and easily. i have adjusted the throttle cam and roller to where they open fully horizontal in wot in gear nd to the back point where they only open 1/4 of the way wot in gear, still whatever i do i cannot get them to open in nuetral. my questions are, how to check if its the throttle cable or control box? the control box in pulled out nuetral only seems to grab the throttle in the last 1/4 push it has before stopping. us marine style 1989 maxum bowrider if that makes a difference. is there a test like unhooking the cable from the back of the control box and trying to open the throttle that would tell me where to start?

This question comes up so frequently that it should be made a sticky!

Outboard engines, specifically Force and Chrysler are NOT like automobile engines where you can floor the pedal and over-rev the engine. These engines have a specific interlock below the bottom carb that LIMITS throttle opening in neutral. They will only open a crack and timing will only advance a couple of degrees. This LIMITS RPM in neutral to somewhere around 1500-2000.

No matter how much you adjust the linkage and cables you can NOT change this.

ok good news. i guess im alot greener at boat engines then i thought, started the boat up and it died down cause my idle screws need to be adjusted taking it out on the water tomorrow for this reason. pulled out and opened up for reving up in neutral and turned the key again and magic the boat started and reved in neutral a little high at 2500 rpms wot in neutral but its better then none right? i was just gonna hold it around 1500 to prevent damage when i warm it up. i never realized that the carbs moving so little could spool up so many rpms in neutral. thanks to frank acampora, jj and john from md for all your guys help i really appricate it. ill let you all know how the carb adjustment goes with a post in here after i take it out tomorrow.
