I just blew my 89 Evinrude 88 spl. Was offered a 1988 Johnson 110 installed for $1895.00 plus my old engine. It may have some kind of warrenty not sure. Is this a fare price? If not what should I offer or expect to pay? My boat max HP is 110 so this is not an issue. Thanks for any help.

Sounds good to me if it has a sufficient warranty. You can check this site for the price of fresh rebuilds and my guess is they will run you $2,2-2,500.00. You still would have a bunch of work to do with a rebuild. Even with a warranty I would do a compression check. I have a pair of 1988 SeaDrives which my insurance company values at around $950.00 ea. I don't consider that a good guide for a fair purchase price though.

What do you mean when you say that you blew your old one? There are some very sharp folks here ready to help. I have seen some posts where the owner thought his motor was only good for an anchor and with a bit of help was able to fix the problem.

I don't think that it is rebuilt recently. I know it was used all last summer in fresh water. It belongs to my friends boss who owns a marina. I don't expect more than a 30 day warrenty but won't know till today.

As for my old motor. I was out on the water running then lost power. Pulled the plugs and the #3 plug had melted aluminum on the spark plug. Talk to a few people and all said I would need and rebuilt powerhead. To fix would be about $3000.00.

Depending on the condition of your motor and on your abilities at turning wrenches, your motor may be fixable for as little as $200. I refreshed my 86 V-4 crossflow with a used piston (from another motor a friend gave me) and new rings for $150. I also replaced one piston (new from precision marine) in his 97 225 looper for $120. If you go this route just be certain of why it failed and fix that problem too. It all depends on what your own time is worth and how much you are willing to spend for someone eles time
