I took the lower leg off, and I turned the shift rod a bunch of times not realizing that I was moving an adjustment (I think). Now that I have it all put back together, it wont shift into forward gear past idle speed. Can I adjust it to its proper position without taking the lower leg off, and how do I know what it's proper position is?

Thanks guys.

Re: 1988 Johnson 120hp shift problem

The shift rod length has to be measured from the line of the mating edge of the gearcase to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod. The gearcase must be in neutral while adjusting the shift rod.

20" gearcase 21-15/16" +/- 1/32 in.

22.5" gearcase 24-7/16" +/- 1/32 in

25" gearcase 26-15/16" +/- 1/32"

I don't see any way to accurately make that adjustment without removing the gearcase.

The measurements are on page 6-4 of your model specific OMC Service Manual.
