i do have an 89, i wrote 88 bc thats wht i was told it is but after working on it i now know its an 89, sorry about that...what is SLOW?

also, what is the correct primer solenoid direction...parrallel, down, full rotation towards boat ?

I have an 88 evinrude 150xp , my temp sensors are hooked to the powerpacks....?? And i also, for a fact, have the 35 amp system....i just replaced the stator, cdi part number 173-3668, i also have the vented flywheel.........is it possible the slow came out in 88? The slow feature is a saftey feature that will slow the motor, warning you of serious failure in several of the systems, oil, water temp, ect........someone correct me if im wrong......

Its the arrow side (narrow end) pointing backwards, but who knows someone might of installed the primer base backwards. Post a photo if you a still unsure

The SLOW system functions when the engine overheats. Once the powerhead heats to 203 degrees, two things happen. 1. an overheat hot horn will sound loudly in the control box. 2. The overheat signal is sent to the power pack and rpm's are limited to 2500 rpm's during the overheat-so that the engine does not hurt itself. The engine will return to normal rpm operation when the engine cools to 162 degrees. I'd get/rent a laser temp gun from your local auto parts store. Next time out, verify the powerhead temps with it. I would not run the engine till you are ready to test it in that manner. If it is overheating, you need to know why the hot horn is not sounding. Another overheat issue is possible if the top of the block is starving for cooling water. That can damage the large combination regulator/rectifier which sits atop the block and is cooled by that water. You need to make sure it's ok, as that 35 amp alternator will make some serious current which can damage a weak regu/rectif.

The important thing about the primer solenoid is that the red lever is in the "run" position. That means it's turned to be parallel to the length of the body of the solenoid.

i was able to get the engine around 5800RPM by disconnecting the temp units

So, the engine thinks it's overheating. Maybe it actually is, or maybe a faulty overheat sensor.

where are the over heating sensors ? its unlikely in my opinion it can be over heated for a few reason. it acts the same whether it runs for 2 minutes or 20, i took the temp of water coming out.. hundred and something, but after running for 2 or 20 minutes it was a few degrees hotter. the block isnt too hot to touch which i was told by a mechanic was a good start in determining an over heat

On an 89, there is a temp sender in each head. On the port head, there is a single tan wire that is connected to the switch in the head cover. On the starboard side, there is the same tan wire and a black wire with a white tracer. Under both those connections is a temp sender. The switches are simple on/off switches that drive the overheat horn and the SLOW system rpm limit system. You will have to pull the head cover off to access them on each head.

i see them , these are the wires i disconnected to test. where can i find replacement switches/ temp unit? iv look thru ebay and 2 other boat warehouse websites and they dont pop up under " 89 johnson thermostat switch units"

You can look them up at the Bombardier factory parts website: epc.brp.com Part number 583441 on the original parts list. Supercedes to: 584592 Use that part number when you order from any Evinrude dealer.
