I see that the 1988 Johnson 4 Deluxe has accessory part number for an alternator (which I don't think is an actual alternator, but instead a stator/rectifier like most old outboards).

However, the accessory part is only listed as compatible with the 4 Deluxe, not the regular 4. The difference between the 4 and 4D is that the deluxe has a reverse gear.

Does anyone know if the alternator will fit on a regular 4, or what modifications are needed to make it work?

E4RCCS is mine. It's a CDI ignition. The deluxe is (I think) E4RDHCCS and it appears to be a magneto setup.

After looking at this I think the system already has a primitive alternator setup and I might be able to make something work

ITYWF an AC lighting kit or a battery charging kit can be fitted to models with CDI ignition but not to models with points ignition because there's no place to fit the stator coil with the points ignition ones.

I think in the case of regular, non de-luxe, models they have a battery charging kit (ie rectifier ) which plugs into an AC lighting outlet socket.

I'd have to check to be sure but I think in all cases the rectifier is the 4 wire type ( 3 x AC input connections and a positive output with the case being the negative)
