I have an 88 70 hp Merc that runs fine for while (1/2 hr to 1 hr). It will then die and not run above an idle. If I try to give it throttle, it dies but will restart. I notice pushing on the choke makes it speed up. The bulb is firm. Any ideas? Could I be sucking air someplace when the engine gets warmed up? Thanks.

Check to make sure you don't have any of the green mercury marine fuel lines, if so unhook both ends and blow into it to make sure its clear. Steve

there could have a few problems... i as well have a 1988 mercury 70 hp... i had that problem... check your carbs... they might have varnish or gunk on them that might be spitting out after the engine has been runnign for a while. check your fuel lines too see if they are clogged or cracked... if so replace them... check your spark plugs as well. that also has to do with the varnish and gunk that might be spitting out into the engine. another problem might be that the compression is not at the right specs... well i hope that this might help you... if you have any other questions just message me.
