1988 OMC 4.3 shift cable mounting

I am putting a boat back together that I did not take apart. The engine is in place, but the plate that holds the shift cable mounts is not mounted on the engine, and I can't seem to figure out where it goes. Is there a standard mount location for 4.3 OMC's? Where does it go? Same question for the fuel filter. And last, but not least, a small plate with two holes that has some kind of small black electrical device mounted on it. Some kind of transformer?

Thanks.

You should post a picture of everything that you have so far.

Re: 1988 OMC 4.3 shift cable mounting

Assuming it is a Cobra such as mine is; There is a large bracket that mounts to the starboard side of the carburator on the intake manifold...One cable goes to this bracket from the helm shifter, and the actual outdrive shifter cable goes to the same bracket and operates on a pivot motion...This same bracket will have misc electrical relays and 50 amp fuse plugs on it. Some of the relays are for the power lift/trim and plug into the electrical harness.

The small plate Im not sure what it is, But I just yanked a 4.3 out of my 88 OMC cobra and there is one that sounds like the one that you are talking about that mounts to the rear port side (back by the oil pressure sensor ) of the engine and plugs into the electrical harness. I think it's electronic ignition box.

The fuel filter is front lower starboard.

I have some pics of my engine on my home pc,which will show these I think.I will try to upload them and post them for you tomorrow beings I am at work now.As for as that little box you speak of,it sounds like your esa module. That is, electronic shift module.

Here is an exploded view to go along with Kris's pic, may help or confuse you more. The black item as mentioned sounds like your ESA module item # 71

Thanks to you all!

Thanks to you all!

Friends,

Thank you very much for the replies, and in particular the photos and schematic. They were exactly what I needed. I hope to fire the freshly rebuilt engine this weekend.

Regards,
Keen
