When idling at low rpm in fwd there is a constant bumping in the outdrive unit. the local marina said it was the clutch dog on the lower unit and wanted $2100 to rebuild. the attempted to adjust the cable but to no avail. anyone had similar problems with this, but with a cheaper fix?

Re: 1988 omc cobra out drive

I have a 1988 Sunbird with the 4.3 ltr engine and have had the same problem. First the local marine repair shop told me that there had been a recall on that shift cable. I have the new cable which they were able to adjust. When I would go into forward gear at low rpm I would hear a thud in the lower unit. Find out if you have the new shift cable, mine is red, it may need to be adjusted.

omc also had a recall on the lower unit gearset. the new gearset has a steeper angle on the clutch dog tabs so the clutch would not be jumping in and out of gear.

AH YES !! I have an 88 Cobra and YES it does that too, and YES the Marina told me about the Overhaul, and YES I also did the replacement Cable, and YES It continues to still do that Jumping /Bumping noise when First engaged..BUT after I push the Throttle forward enough the Dog teeth catch and its fine. It has been like this for 3 Years now, hasnt gotten and Worse or better.
