Took drive off last night , engine coupler and drive shaft looked fine , manually put it in gear and I turned shaft prop spun, took top plate off filled with fluid, top gears looked excellent , took lower off upper and I put in gear the shaft spins when u turn prop if you turn the shaft prop does not spin. If I turn prop and hold shaft the prop will spin but the shaft will not. That is as far as I broke it down. Could it be the shifter is not fully engaging? I don't hear any grinding or it's not hard like a gear is broken. If I just undo the 6 screws where shift lever is out will I be able to see down in there at all?

460 with OMC cobra
Oh no! Not another one!

Howdy,

It's possible that you have a lower shift cable problem that isn't allowing you get it into gear fully. Running it that may have already damaged the shift dogs.

But if you can place the drive in gear and you can still turn the prop, something else might be wrong.

In FWD, when turning the prop clockwise it should "click" BUT you shouldn't be able to turn it backwards.

And in REV you shouldn't be able to turn it forward (CW) and it should click when turning the prop backwards.

If you have already removed the drive, you can move the shift shaft up and down and see if the drive is shifting.

You asked about the coupler. If the engine would idle for extended periods and not overheat, chances are the coupler is ok. If the drive stops turning, the raw water pump also stops and the engine will overheat quickly.

If the drive is damaged internally, get ready for some sticker-shock. The King Cobra drive is very expensive to rebuild and there's more than a few "showstopper" parts that are no longer available (except used)

Good luck,

Rick

You can accurately tell by the actual OMC number and you need an OEM service manual to get it.

The (Dog-Clutch) "King" Cobra that went on the back of the 460 is unique to the 460. It was attached to no other engine.
It holds 108 oz of oil making it the biggest one. If memory serves, it's a 1.41:1 ratio........ (or was it 1.43:1?)

After about 1990, OMC called several different (Cone Clutch) drives "King" and bolted them to other engines. The dog-clutch 460 King Cobra was only offered in 1987, 88 & 89.

Have a look at http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/ for good operation/adjustment info, etc....

Also look at http://www.sterndrive.info/king.html and finally for OEM part numbers http://epc.brp.com

If you REALLY like the boat and want to keep it long term, you might want to consider finding a complete Mercruiser or Volvo engine and drive at your leisure for future replacement.........That's what I did about 5 years ago with the boat in my signature below........

Good luck
