1988Yr 85hp force motor smoking

i am just wondering what would be causeing my eng to smoke really bad and when put hood back on it dies out some time. like its not get good air to it. thinking it might be a exhaust probelm if anyone can help with this would be great.

My bad smoke problem was a plugged fuel recirculation system

It could be the rubber exhaust boot that goes between the engine and the back of the cowl. Mine was leaking both exhaust and water into the cowling. Its not fun to replace.
