I'm trying to get this 1989 engine running for the weekend. Just picked it up (cheap), was supposedly running taken in on a trade in.......Well after noticing the timer base was barely mounted and it has two cdi boxes, all the connectors were half connected, and it wont start, I looked into the wiring diagrams. Someone put a 1986 ignition system on it with the old style timer base, and two CDI boxes. The engine almost starts but just won't light off. I don't know if it's even possible to run, assuming the stator and flywheel are going to be different, and probably different timing pickup points etc. It's acting like the ignition is firing after top center.

The 1989 ignition has a different timer base, one CDI box, and who knows what else may be different.

So, is it possible to just mess with timing and get it running, or does it need a whole new ignition system??

After comparing part numbers on Max Rules, looks like I can use the CDI box and timer base from my 140 Looper. Besides that, I'm hoping they left the stock stator on the 110 when they butchered everything. The CDI box looks like the same as the 1988 110 because it has a 6700 rev limiter, and the 89 doesn't have one. Timer base on my Looper is brand new, and crosses over to both engines. Might have just saved some big money, and TIME, .....it's weds already, weekend coming fast.

UPDATE: anyone that might be wondering, now the engine runs perfect. I haven't had it in the water yet, but on the trailer it starts right up and runs great. I now have the correct flywheel as well for the single power pack. Dunno if the one I took off was wrong, but it runs now.......on to the next post....getting more HP
