1989 120 merc cruser,alpha 1, no reverse.

I have a 1989 120 merc cruser, alpha 1, I have forward, but no reverse, I was told that the lower shift cable needs to be replaced, I took off the drive and the cable works fine, and pulls the dog ear all the back.the drive works when I move the shaft into reverse by hand,the inside looks good I see no signs of water damage. could this be anything else other than the cable? I hate to buy a cable and have the same problem. Thanks.

Ayuh,... It Could be any part in the whole system...
But the lower shift cable is the Most common, Most probable....

The factory manuals are up in the Adults Only section,...
Go ahead,+ have a peek....

If you disconnect it at the linkage on the engine, can move it freely into and out of gear, the issue is a stretched cable. The new one is a better design anyway. Go ahead, get a manual in the stickies and replace it.
