1989 120HP J high idle

i checked the carbs, performed link and synk, even adjusted the idle timing with no success.... it idles in water in neutral at around 900-1000 and in gear around 800... the manual says "the engine should idle between 575-700 rpm in gear..." ... i checked the timing and it is at 8 ATDC... i tried to adjust the timing past 8 but with no change.... the motor still runs at the same rpms...

could there be an air leak past the carbs? i would think that by retarding the timing no matter what the motor should either run rough or die.. but thats not the case.... thanks

Did you disable QuikStart before adjusting the timing? Is your QuikStart working correctly and cutting out when the engine reaches 96 degrees?

no, i didnt disable the quickstart because the motor was already warmed up...

is the quick start working? good question, not sure... but i wouldnt think that it would make a huge difference since other than retarding the timing 4*, didnt think the quickstart does anything else....

i should probably check make sure the QS works....

no, i didnt disable the quickstart because the motor was already warmed up...

is the quick start working? good question, not sure... but i wouldnt think that it would make a huge difference since other than retarding the timing 4*, didnt think the quickstart does anything else....

The Quikstart powerpack advances the timing until the engine reaches 96 degrees or 1100 RPM. When it's working, the advance is released with a quite noticeable downward change in RPM, which you should both hear and feel. If it's not working correctly it would be difficult to get the RPM down to a reasonable level.

since i had to change the rectifier i tested the timer base and the stator... the timer base was fine but the stator was reading high 507ohms. acording to the manual the reading should be 480 +-25 ... so i assume i should probably change the stator...

could the stator be the part of my idling problem?

found that the port temp switch was bad... i think that might be part of my problem... i should have it replaced by Wednesday.. i will post again with updates...
