Re: 1989 135 hp mercury overheating at mid range

I just had a similar issue. Mine is a 150HP Mariner V6. New stats waterpump and poppet valve, but I did not replace the grommet which is inside the block. When I attempted to remove it, it did not even budge and I was concerned on exerting too much force to pry it out. Everything seemed fine last weekend running, but then around 1800 rpm chugging back up the cove to my slip, the alarm went off. I shut down for about a minute - starte dback up and had no more problems. I will now change the grommet. Any suggestions on how to remove it ? Thanks

The grommet is the rubber ring the fits over the carrier. The carrier is somewhat fixed in the block and I doubt seriously if that would be your problem. My next question, was there a grommet installed? If so, recheck the installation just to be sure. If there is no more problems, you may have temporarly picked up a piece of plastic over the water intakes.
