After I turn the key off it continues to run, I can turn the key on and continue on my way. She runs fine at 5000 RPM (overproped) WOT , just have to choke her to stop.

I wish this was a water pump problem, I'd have 20 replies by now!

Help!

Re: 1989 135 V6 Mariner Will Not Shut Off... HELP!

Thanks for the response, hope is simply a bad connection and not the power pack. I too fell into the trap of suspecting a bad ignition switch until I did a search on here.

I'm learning a lot about my O/B, that's for sure. Replaced the upper/lower water pump housing/impeller earlier this spring and compression check was 120# across all cylinders. I'm well into whomping stripers on the Chesapeake and don't want any down time with the engine.

Does anyone have a link for troubleshooting the power pcak if it's more than the ground wire?

hello
that kill circuit gronds the black/yellow wire to ground at the pack. to test you can start it on the flusher then use a jumper lead and ground the black yellow pack connector. it should die. you can also use an ohm meter and test the kill circuit from the pin at the harness connector to ground. it may just be unplugged at the ign switch.
evinrudes had some pack failures years ago that would cut spark to two cyl and keep running but you could not make any power. I would test the system as per the service manual for any opens in the black/yellow kill circuit to ground.
good luck and keep posting

Dashaway, you may want to check out www.brokeboats.com... The guy operating the site is Wayne Webber. The site lists alot of info which may or may not be of help. I had problems with my 150 Hp Merc V6 last season and Wayne provided me with some serious and immediate help via e-mail. I joined his help hot line for $9 (yes, that's nine dollars) and Wayne was calling me on my cell phone while I was troubleshooting my engine at the slip!
My engine is humming now... Waiting for you guys down South to send some of those lunkers up this way !!!

Thanks guys, I removed the cowl on Saturday, and started inspecting wires around the power packs and didn't see anything wrong.

After that the motor shut off just fine. It appeared to be a connection problem, and after I pull her I'll remove the power packs and check/clean the connections, I don't need intermittant problems with this.
