I just bought the boat, 1989 Stratos 279 FS, already replaced the water pump, clean all three carburators, replaced fuel filter, clean fuel tanks, replaced spark plugs, and three ignition coils(used), bottom cylinders seems to get a little spark after the engine run for a couple of minutes, I installed a good know coil on the bottom right cylinder, please help. Compression with cold engine is 90 PSI to highest and 88 PSI as lowest. Already tried in the river, throttle goes to 3/4, if you try a full throttle the engine seems to surge and try to stall. Thanks.

It sounds like a lot of variables. Are the used coils good working order? Did you do a resistance test on them? What do the spark plugs look like after you run it for a few minutes. Did you do a spark test? Timing correct? I would try the coils first and then the spark test and then the timing. If those are good, what about your fuel pump and/or primer bulb? Bulb staying full at full throttle? Right fuel pressure from the pump? Air leaks in the fuel system? Check all your connections and make sure they are tight with no leaks.:)

How dirty were the carbs when you tore em down? Jets clear? All varnish residue gone?

Thanks for the reply, the carbs were totally clogged the bottom with flakes, worse one, the middle also but not as bad as the bottom one, the top not too bad, I bought this boat with not running engine, former owner said did no start for the last five years?, hard to say, the spark plugs looks wet after the engine run fro a while, 20 min. or so, then it start to run rough. I swap the good running coils for the "bad ones", and installed the used ones there and all works good until the engine start to warm up, I do not know what are the specs for this engine, since I do not have the manual for it. I you can give me some advice or specs please, after I cleaned the carbs, and install a new kit, the engine start to run a little better, but still run rough after the initial warm up, bottom cylinders start to loose spark (even with the good know coils), my next step is to replace the power pack, clean all the ground connections, replaced the primer bulb.

I have to ask, did you run a piece of wire down thru the idle passages and pull out all the jets to check if they are perfectly cleaned out? You have 6 jets per carb. Make sure all the jets are the same #'s for the respective jet. I had that problem with the motor I bought. Also, did you try manually running the choke with the engine warmed up? Bring the rpms up and turn the choke on(away from the block) and your engine should bog down. Maybe you have problems with your choke also. Still many variables. I think you have fast start with your engine(powerpack) and maybe some more things that I don't have on my '85 150. That's all I can help with at this point.

When I cleaned the carbs I used a chemical that we used for fuel inductionand is very strong, but I did not use any kind of brush, just throttle body cleaner and sprayed in all jets, passages, etc. my main problem now seems to be a lost of spark in both bottom cylinder, but more on one and the other a little weak spark compare with the other four, I useda a spark tester that looks like a pencil from Calterm nmber 66331 ignition firing indicator. I did not have a chance to work back on the OB yet due to lack of time, will resume work this saturday, will post any updates, now I am trying to buy a power pack for my engine. Thanks for the reply.:)

Weak ignition componets tend to fail when the engine heats up to normal operating temps. Usually the coils are not a high failure item, so look to the power pack, stator and timer base as potential problems. These are all high $ items. I'd suggest getting a factory service manual from Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee-it will list numerous test activities for those ignition components.

:redface:Today I bought a set of spray paint wire brushes to re-clean my carbs, and still shopping for a power pack(ignition), will keep updated with results as soon as can get my parts install, thanks.

Rebuild carbs with new carb kits.
Replumb fuel lines from tank.
Get the manual.

I tend to think used powerpacks are a waste of good money, unless you can test before buying.
