I recently purchased an 18 ft. boat with an '89 150HP VRO V6.

The guy I bought it off said he always pre-mixes his fuel 50:1 as he does not trust the VRO. I don't know if it's disconnected, or if it's gone all together.

How do I check if the VRO unit is still there or if it is still there, if it has been disconnected?

What is the difference in pre-mixing and having the VRO?

In other words, if it is gone or disconnected what difference will it make to the performance of the motor?

Re: 1989 150HP VRO

Hi there!

Have a look at the VRO posts in Engine FAQ's. There's an article called "The VRO story" that has a picture of the VRO and explains the operation of the oil injection.

Do you have the oil tank still in the boat? Follow it's hose to the engine and VRO. Is it connected to the VRO pump or not? The VRO oil intake should be blocked if it's not in use.

Pre-mixing gives you 50:1 all the time. The VRO (Variable Ratio Oiling) gives 150:1 at idle and 50:1 at full throttle.

It will not make any difference to performance. But as the engine gets more oil pre-mixed at idle it will smoke a little more.

My brother's OMC Seadrive 115Hp got problems with the VRO and I'm going to install a regular fuel pump and pre-mixing.

Happy boating!

Robbi
