A friend of mine had his lower unit rebuilt by an individual not a shop. After he got it back i helped him reinstall the lower unit.

After we got it all together it would go in faward gear just fine but would not go into reverse no matter how we adjusted the shift cable.I disconected the shift cable and put it in reverse manually but had to push back kinda hard to get it to do so.

We ended up taking the lower unit back off and unscrewed the shift rod about 2 or 3 turns, put it back together and walla after a little adjusting on the shift cable we now had farward and reverse.Nice and smooth in and out of gear.Took it for a test run and all was good,no problems what so ever.

My friend later found out his LU was leaking and took his motor to a different individual not a shop, and this individual told him that the last guy forgot a seal on the shift rod which i didn't think there was one?correct me if i'm wrong. He also told him the shift rod was adjusted out to far and that there is a certain measurement to go by when adjusting the shift rod?

It makes since to me but it doesn't,because the motor shifted smooth as silk,no grinding what so ever either way.Is there a certain measurement to go by when doing this?

Yes, with the lower unit in neutral, there is a specific measurement required between the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the hole at the top of the shift rod. You'll need to find that measurement in a service manual unless someone inserts it here.

Shift rod dimension - gearcase to center of shift rod hole

long shaft - 21 27/32 +- 1/32 in
extra long shaft 26 27/32 +- 1/32 in

Would that be it Joe?

Ok,when the shift rod comes up through the tube and then connects to the link and pin assy...the rod bends inward and then up.

With it adjusted to where whoever rebuilt the LU when we first installed the LU the rod would hit on the top lip of the stearing arm assy preventing it from going in reverse.this is why we had to adjust it out more,so it would clear the top of the stearing arm assy.

Got the boat back today and when he went to test it,it would not go into reverse again............The person that did the work came down to the river and tried adjusting the cable with no results.

Don't know if this would have anything to do with it but the original person who rebuilt the LU said he put gears out of a 115 hp LU.Said as long as they where shimmed right they would work fine?

I'm assuming long shaft = 20'' and
xtra long shaft = 25''?

Dieselcat...... So did you drop the lower unit and adjust the shift rod as explained above? If not, problems will develop further. The measurement is critical and unforgiving.

No,whoever he has working on it has the boat.I was just wanting to explain what is going on with it and get some feed back.Wanted to make sure this person working on it is not just blowing smoke bout the measurement.

Thanks,
Shane
