I have had this problem for a couple of years but it has been getting worst lately. When my motor has not been started for some time I usually have a hard time starting it using the starter motor.

What happens is the bendix does not jump high enough to catch the flywheel. If I keep trying it usually will start after a number of re-tries. I have lubed the bendix shaft with regular motor oil, that did not seem to have made things better or worst. Note that the battery is fine and there is plenty of power to start once the bendix catches the flywheel.

It has now gotten bad enough that I sometimes have to start the motor with the cord (it does usually start on 1st pull which is good!) once the engine has run for a while (20-30 min) the starter will work fine after that.

Any idea on what I should do to make it catch properly every time, it is particularly bad when the wheather gets colder, which makes me believe that it could be a lube problem.

I think you are right in assuming a lube problem. The bendix shafts should not normally be lubed. I would clean the shaft thoroughly with a degreaser. If that fails, remove the starter and have the bendix reconditioned at a reputable auto electrician. Shouldn't be more than a couple of bucks.

Sorry I have to dissagree here. I agree he should degrease the shaft. Then lube with somthing like WD40. Lube a couple of times per year.

Make sure you have at least 9.5 volts at the starter while cranking. If not you have a problem in the battery or wiring.

Only about 3 things cause that to happen.

1. Low battery or bad cable connections.

2. Weak starter or worn shaft......maybe weal solenoid

3. Worn drive

Replace or repair as neccessary. Lubing is only a temporary fix for the problem. Do you always have to lube new starters and drives? No, of course not.

I tend to agree with Rude African here. The key to my attitude is that once properly engaged, the starter has no problem firing up the engine.

I think a careful cleaning of the shaft and Bendix gear and relube with somethng light, like WD-40 should solve the problem.

If that doesn't solve it, Stephan, please get back to us with new info. (on this thread)

Good luck. :)
