It seems that my outboard is running too much oil. It smokes constantly and is hard to start. Once started, she will turn over in an instant. It seems that the pump is working fine if I am getting oil, but why does it seem like I am getting too much oil. Any ideas.

Some friends have suggested that maybe there is a hole or opening in the diaphram. Is this likely?

Thanks for all of your help.

Hi, Sutton.

One common cause of your problem is that something is reducing the amount of gasoline being pumped, but not the amount of oil.

Look for a weak fuel pump (the part that pumps the gas), air leaks in the fuel supply lines, restrictions in tank venting, pickup or lines.

Good luck. :)

suttonc,Along the same lines as JB points out in decreased fuel volume flow. The fuel and oil pump are piston style driven by a common rod from air motor. The fuel half tends to loose efficiecy quicker than the oil half because of the viscous gasoline it pumps in comparison.Did some research. You can get rebuild kits for pump if you find that all other components that would restrict fuel otherwise have checked out.

Re: 1989 225 Johnson VRO questions

I have a '94 Johnson 200. It had the same symptoms... a bear to start and enough blue smoke that I wouldn't start it near the dock. Defective VRO pump, $319.00 CDN and 1.5 hrs labour later and everything is back to normal. It was using so much oil that it would not start or run without the primer lever in the prime position. (Gas consumption was also thru the roof)
