Hey everyone, I have a 1989 25hp Mercury Mariner short shaft. The motor is 100% in great condition, always greased, always serviced well and on time. Last year I ran my outboard into something big on the Potomac. Took me some time but I realized I snapped the very top of my drive shaft near the splines. The cheapest route for me was just to replace the lower unit. I got my hands on one but as I’m putting everything back together, I ran into a big issue. When I disassembled my outboard, I had to remove the lower unit, the mid section, shift shaft linkage pin, and the lower part of the swivel assembly mounts couplings that hold the lower unit in place. After this, I had the outboard sitting in pieces until I purchased the brand used lower unit.

So, the big issue I ran into, here in the picture you can see the lower part of the pivot tube protruding out of the assembly bracket swivel housing. The part of the pivot tube that protrudes the swivel housing is suppose to show three holes where the mounting bracket that hold the lower unit attach and fit into. My issue is that the pivot tube actually worked it’s way up into the swivel housing and now not all there holes are exposed well enough, so now there’s no room to mount the lower unit mounting pieces. I tried pushing down on the top of the outboard hoping the pivot tube would slide down into the swivel housing to sit flush but it just won’t. Any ideas of how to fix this? I’m not even sure why the pivot tube slipped up the swivel housing.

Here’s a picture of my swivel assembly on the motors that needs work. And I have another picture of my other Mercury 25hp outboard as a reference. It shows the lower part of the swivel assembly mounting brackets that attach to the lower unit.

The only way that shaft moved up is if the whole swivel assembly moved. You have something together wrong look at the parts breakdown. That is a solid tube so something might be off. Would have been easier to pull the powerhead alone.
