It sounds like the brass on the rotor was contacting the brass nipples on the bottom of the cap for some reason. Are you sure that cap and rotor are properly paired together? I would take the cap off and place the rotor in it and see if it looks like there is enough clearance for it to rotate. If not they might not be paired correctly or just a manufacturing error.

Sorry guys, didn't look at the second page before posting. I can look up the number I ordered for my 89 3.0 but what AllDodge listed should have you squared away. As to where to get them, you can buy them here on iBoats. If your in a hurry you can go to your local auto parts store and they can cross reference your numbers. Orielly's carry's Sierra parts and that's where I got my last cap and rotor when I was in a hurry.

Ok so you know where I could find a replacement distributor. Sorry for the hundred questions but I have been chasing my tail on this and can’t find reliable info until now.

You may just be getting the wrong cap and rotor. Check the parts you ordered to see if they are correct, if not order the correct ones. If they were correct then let see if we can find another distributor

I ordered the part numbers that you supplied. Will let you know if anything changes. Again I really appreciate the help.

either that is the wrong cap for that distributor or the wrong rotor. are you sure the rotor is pushed down on the shaft fully?

How was everything before the cap and rotor were replaced? The old cap and rotor ran OK?

Yeah it ran fine no issues on that but I threw the old cap away thinking I was good

make sure the rotor is fully seated (use the handle of a screw driver to tap it down)

Can you tell where the rotor electrode is hitting the inside of the cap? Picture?

Did the old rotor pull off easily or was it Loctited in place?

It is hitting just before the metal points on the cap. I can’t take a picture and upload it says it’s too big. I have seated it good and still rubbing

Then my guess is you need to rebuild the distributor, or need another one

What I did was get a distributor cap and rotor for a 1963 Pontiac tempest and installed it and the boat ran for three more hours hard today. Going to open the cap up tomorrow and see what it looks like inside. But I may have found my fix.

Rotor and cap were fine when I pulled the cap off. I also had to put a bigger screw in on the smaller side for the cap to stay put. But it seems like the boat is good to go and hope to use it for a good bit. Thanks for all your help and suggestions.
