1989 4.3 Mercruiser warm start issue

I know that this has been asked before more than likely, but I am first time boat owner and need instruction.
Just purchased a 1898 Sea ray 180 bow rider with 4.3 alpha 1. 236 oringinal hours. My problem is starting.

Cold start: I place throttle in forward position, pump handle 2 to 3 times start right up. let run at about 1500 rpms for a couple mintues than go to idle and way we go!

Warm or hot start : leave at idle, crank a long time no fire. Place at 1/3 throttle crank no fire. Pump throttle 2 to 3 times leave at 1/3 throttle starts after long crank blackish grey smoke makes me belive rich.

What am I doing wrong? after starting boat performs perfect. What should I be doing to start a non efi 4.3?

I had this issue on a 1990 4.3 2bbl carb. Engine is flooding (something with fuel leaking past the needle valve?). For me, putting the throttle wide open then cranking worked great, pull the throttle back when it starts.

A carb rebuild fixed this problem for me. Starts right away in idle like a car now.
