Hi to All,

Today I went out to try out a new bow mounted 40# all terain trolling motor. Monitored the amps and voltage draw on battery. I decided to check voltage on cranking battery it was 12.3 volts. I then started the engine and it stayed fairly constant. I then put it in gear and ran it half speed it went to about 12.5. I thought it should have been higher if my engine is charging. I'm not even sure it has a charger, it does have a
rectifer so I'm thinking it has a charger. Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Beck

If the battery is fully charged you may not see a noticeable difference when the motor is running. I read on a post that the tach works off the charging system. If your tach is working, the charging system is working.

I dont think the 48 charged much more than 4 or 5 amps at WOT on that year model. 9 amps at the best.
it wont keep up with a trolling motor for sure.
good luck and keep posting

Re: 1989 48 spl charging system??

Thanks for the replys,

My older 24# MK trolling motor, I had hooked up to the cranking battery. With this new 40# MK I plan to use a seperate deep cycle. The cranking battery that I use is a 12 volt battery which was used in a 4 battery 24 volt setup for a diesel engine at work. I'm not sure of the specs. The installers hooked them up incorrectly and we had to replace them, I wound up with the only survivor. It holds a charge for a good while between charges with my auxilary charger. I just thought I would have seen the 13.5 charging volts like you see on auto's.

Ray..Your explanition would explain why I didn't see the increased voltage.

Rod..I agree I have a deep cycle also.

Thanks again,
Beck
