1989 50HP alarm problem

bought a used boat and finally put it in the water, problem is that the alarm (continuous) goes off as soon as I turn the key to the on position ... it doesn't shut off

this is what I found, if I disconnect the tan wire that goes into the engine at the rear, the alarm still sounds.

if I unplug the tan wire on the left side of the engine, the alarm stops, here's a pic of the disconnected unit. what are my options? I don't know where this tan wire goes without untaping everything. fyi, the alarm goes off even when the engine is cold and as soon as I put it to the on position. what alarm is this wire for????????

any help would be appreciated!

are you running with the oil tank, vro, or has it been converted to premix?

i am running with an oil tank and using the vro, not premixed

sounds like your vro tank has failed .there is a float level sensor and a molded in circuit board on top of the tank.as for options you can run with tank alarm disabled and keep your eye on oil level.or replace tank.but back in the old days of OMC tech school believe it or not. they told us to pick the tank up and slam it down.just to knock the float lose if it is stuck.?

i will remove the tank and inspect ... but would that float sensor give a steady alarm tone? i thought it went intermittent . beep beep beep every 1/2 second if no oil. just curious

yes that is the alarm it should give. but it depends on how that circuit board failed.

ok, finally got around to it and this is what i found. i removed the float from the oil reservoir and it looks like the plunger (small metal rod with washer) has something missing from it, it moves in and out but can't figure out what makes it float, this is what is giving me the alarm. if I move the plunger up so the washer doesn't make contact, it gives a 20 second interval beep. something is not working right down there so I disconnected the tan wire and will keep an eye on my oil level. I also tested the overheat sensor and it works a1

If I keep an eye on the oil level, I should be ok right?
