Re: 1989 70 Johnson - Will Not Idle

HI, Renegade, Your mechanic is correct. According to OMC Service Bulletin # 2276 Rev.1 There is a cooling system modification on 1986 thru 1994 70 hp motors. Air can get trapped in the upper half of the cooling system. and cause overheating. There is a series of steps to re-locate the waterpump indicator outlet. it includes drilling a hole in the motor in a certain location.

Re: 1989 70 Johnson - Will Not Idle

I called the Johnson/Evinrude Consumer Relations number and spoke to a tech but he could not give me the information needed to make the modification. Does anyone know where I can get the specs & modification instructions to do this myself. The tech did tell me it is a fairly quick modification (takes about a 1/2 hour). Any informaiton would be very much appreciated.

The data sheet use to come with waterpump kit, with parts to do the mod, also had mod for pressure relief spring, and there is SB for temp sensor upgrade and jets for carb.

Measure 2in. forward from the rear - top - surface of the exhaust manifold cover( the sandwiched castings on the port side of the powerhead) and 1 3/8 in. in from the parting line (gasket area) for the exhaust cover. Drill an 11/32 in. hole >NO DEEPER THAN A ½ IN< and tap to 1/8 in. NPT. Relocate the water indicator elbow there and plug the original hole with a non corrosive pipe plug. Add a new indicator hose (3/16 x 19in long) and your done.

johnnyrude must have read it right out of the book, the pn for the waterpump kit that has the instructions, nipple, springs, pressure relief cover, and new style impeller ?? should be 432955. SB 2225 covers replacement of thermostat seat. The upgraded temp sensor wire is tan with blue stripe, old sensor has tan wire. You need more, my Sbs stop at Sept 1999.

Re: 1989 70 Johnson - Will Not Idle

Does anyone know where the line (pick up mark) should be on the throttle cam in reference to the cam follower roller on a '89 70hp Johnson carb (middle carb of course). Should it be in the middle of the roller, under, or above? Let me know.

The lower mark on the cam should align with the with the center of the cam follow roller, just as the throttle shaft begins to move. You make a throttle shaft amplifier to connect to throttle shaft( somekind of clip with soda straw about 8 inches long) watch the end of the straw, when it moves tighten the screw. The idle timeing also should be check after this adjustment, just as the cam contacts the roller the timing should be 1 degree BTDC +- 1 degree,

Re: 1989 70 Johnson - Will Not Idle

How do I tell the timing is "1 degree BTDC +-1 degree"? there are marks stationary marks above where the spark advance movement occurs. should I be referencing one of these marks for the timing? Or, 1 degree from what? I understand the roller part of the adjustment, just not the timing (1 degree?)<br />Thank you very much for your help.
