Will a 1987 85 HP block fit all the parts from a 1989 85hp motor.
Yes, they are Force. My Serial is 856X9E
My block is shot and I found an 87 block.
I could save myself all the cost of machine work if it fits.
My motor is torn down completely. I actually have the block ready to drop off at the machine shop but I tripped over the 87 block.
All Id need is a gasket kit if Im lucky.

Everything is swappable--even the ignition. You will need a base gasket to fit between the match plate and block. If the bypass covers are still on the new block, then leave them and you won't need those gaskets. If your head gasket is ok, it also is reuseable. However, you will need to make or buy gaskets for the manifold and reed blocks.

Excellent. Man, you are like the Force God of Knowledge!!
This thing is stripped to the bone. Its a bare block.
Some of my gaskets are still present and probably usable but my thoughts are if I spent 3 hours tearing down my block, all new gaskets are going back in it.
I even bought a torque wrench for the reassembly.
I was going to buy a gasket set here for it.

Mallory Gasket Set, Powerhead 9-64003

This is the one, right? Its got the head gasket included. I see some kits dont include the head gasket.

On a final note, whats the black RTV thats used?? Just black RTV or is it something special for engine block assembly?

I have also used small diameter screen spline bought at Home Depot/ Lowes. Works just as well as the spaghetti tubing and is resistant to gasoline too.

That gasket set I mentioned in my earlier post seems to have that spaghetti tube included.

Thanks guys.

A note to others on this scenario.

The blocks are interchangeable but the exhaust side of the block is a touch different.
The gasket set I bought was for the 89 and the 85's is a little different.
You have to make yourself some new holes on the outer gasket that seals the water passages from the exhaust chamber.

I dont see a problem with doing this and I hope it doesnt.
