1989 85hp force choke issues?

Ok boating guru's.. I got a 1989 17ft bayliner with a 85hp force outboard. The guy I got it from used a screwdriver as the key.the old ignition was really torn up. I put a new ignition in and followed the diagram perfectly. I even triple checked it.. Everytime I press the key in for the choke the breaker on the motor near the choke pops? Any ideas?

Even though you triple checked, it still sounds like you have a wire crossed. I have read on here about people who bought aftermarket ignitions the wire colors are differant and dont match up. If you have a manual compare the manual to the wire diagram that came with ignition. if not check for bad/open wires under dash.

yes it was an aftermarket ignition. I compaired the manual and the sheet from the ignition. %100 correct. Is there different ignitions for different motors? What I mean would the configuration be different for a johnson over a force? Could I have an incorect ignition?

There is no doubt that you have a direct short to ground if you are popping the breaker when you engage the choke. The good thing is, the problem is easy to find. The choke wire is green. If properly connected, when you press in on the switch it sends power from the red wire to the green wire energizing the choke.

Assuming it was working when you took it apart, you probably hooked up the blue wire and the green wire in reverse. That will give you a short to ground when you push in on the choke.

I believe the choke sil is bad... I took the ignition back out. Took the green (choke) wire and connected it to the 12volt . breaker blew instantly.. So i reconnected the ignition per instructions and the diagram. I turned the ignition to on and ran a wire from the "hot" on the distribution block on the engine to the choke... then blammo the breaker popped.. could there be a dead short in the choke sil.. can this happen? any suggestions?

You can check the windings in the choke with an ohm meter. It should read about .6 ohms. Disconnect the green wire from the wiring harness to the choke solenoid. Put one meter lead on the case of the solenoid, the other meter lead on the electrical connection on the choke solenoid. You may have to use a digital ohm meter to be able to read .6 ohms. It's difficult to read .6 ohms on most analog (meter with needle) meters. If it reads less than .6 ohms, windings in the solenoid are shorted to the case(ground). It's bad.

Be careful when you are disconnecting the choke wire from the choke solinoid. You must restrain the post from turning as you remove the nut. If the post turns, it will rip the internal coil wire off and the solinoid will not work.

Double check that the wire terminal on the choke terminal is not touching the choke retaining strap. The insulation washer at the choke terminal is very small.

All of that is ok.. the sil i believe is just bad.. new one should be here by monday.
