I have recently gone through this engine top to bottom. A previous owner had spun the impeller and shut down when the horn went off. I still found head gaskets full of pin holes, one partially melted by pass valve, and other signs of overheat. Basicly I did every gasket in the powerhead including powerhead to mid section, back plate gaskets, thermostat housing gaskets, new 'stats, rebuilt carbs, etc. Early indication is that motor was "saved". I am considering converting to trim and tilt. Is this a feasable conversion? Any ideas on cost? Is the trim and tilt assy available from a junk yard? I know there are a lot of these OMC V4s around so there must be a good supply of used parts.

penyanman,

The conversion to TNT is not that bad.

The entire unit slides out of the mid section clamp bracket. You can buy it all as a unit.

It will go in place of the shock cylinder you see in there now.

Expect to pay upwards of $6-700.00 for a good used one.

That's about what I figured. The "Armstrong" tilt system will have to do until my bank account recovers from the last adventure, but I might treat myself to a winter project.

pennyanman, fellow longislander here with the same engine. Do you know of any outboard junkyards on the island?

See Henry @ Anything Marine off River Avenue on the West side of the Patchogue River. He also has a website (anythingmarine.com). He's sometimes a little tough to find, and he has a rather unique attitude toward the customer, ie he is open when he feels like it. He is pretty good at getting back to you if you leave a message or e-mail him with a request.

Good luck!
