My motor was diagnosed as running hot 175 - 180 degrees etc... maybe hotter and might have some restrictions and was told to remove the power head and inspect etc. Got most of what I can see un-bolted and dis-assembled but the power head wont move....How to go about taking it off ?? Help ?? I thought I could do this myself as I allready spent a good amount on having the carb re-built and a new water pump professionally installed......... Thanks..........

Your reply was very helpfull and I did manage to get the power head off and found my problem was blockage where the copper water tube sits inside the rubber grommet at the top end into the power head. The grommet had disintegrated and and the pieces remaining formed a block to the water flow. I replaced the rubber grommet, the power head gasket and I'll put in a new thermostat and hopefully get it all back together shortly. Only issue was finding out I had to remove the lower screw from the shift rod coupling to get the lower unit it to drop out.

Can you run this motor without the thermostat installed ??

Ran just fine today.....Pumped water..........Only issue is it stalls out at low peed / idle & cuts out.....Might be the fuel pump ?? Have to pump the bulb and pull the choke to get going again......Once it's started it stays running on high idle and full throttle..........Oh well ..........
Thanks for your comments........

Hookmaster,
The fuel pump will set you back about $60. So, before going the fuel pump route, check out your low speed jetting and the fuel pump function.
Fuel pump: Test the fuel pump by removing the small diameter fuel line at the carb. Be sure you are at the carb and not at the pump. This will also test for gas line blockage. Wrap the fuel line open end with a shop rag and pull on the starter. As in normal operation, the cylinder pressure should cause the fuel pump to pulse-spit fuel into the rag. If you get fuel, you have good pump; no need to part with Mr. Grant.
Low speed jetting: Pull the carb and get into the jets with a small diameter wire or jet cleaning tool. You can get into one of them without manipulating the throttle butterfly valve. You have to manipulate the butterfly valve to reach the other; they about 0.020" to 0.030" in diameter. They are on the top side of the venturi, backed by a welch plug on top of the carb.
Hope this helps.

Re: 1989 9.9 Evinrude - Removing the power head ??

I had the carb re-built about a month ago, professionally, so might just replace the FP and see what happens. If I hit the kill switch when it is running on high idle, I can re-start it with one pull.......If it dies out at low idle, I have to pump the bulb, pull out the choke and then take two or three good pulls to get it to start again, but as I said, no problem re-starting if it dies at high idle which leads me to believe thr carb fuel bowl empies out at low idle speed ??

You probably removed the inlet cap of the pump when removing the power head.
Just check the gasket. Turn it around and it might be just fine.

Re: 1989 9.9 Evinrude - Removing the power head ??

Just to update......I had the same problem with it cutting out on low speed idle before I took off and re-installed the power head. All I did was take off the fuel feed hose so I could remove the head. I have ordered a pump repair kit online and will try that. I did try adjusting the low speed idle valve several time while running with no success. Pulling out the choke kept it running on low speed idle............Thanks.........
