i have a 17ft 1989 bayliner capri that i bought last year and it has a 2.3 l ford motor in it. we spent most the year troubleshooting the motor but now we have it running strong. the problem we have is we we can not get her to plain out. we narrowed the problem down to the prop but the prop is wore to much to get the numbers off of. and trying to find the right prop for what you want to do with the boat is a mess. so i was wonering if anyone knows what the boat comes with for a stock prop. or what prop i should get???? any help would be amazing! thank you!

Re: 1989 bayliner capri prop problems

Howdy,

Welcome to iboats!

This question might be best asked in the prop forum.

You will also need to ensure that you have the right drive on the boat.

If the drive has been replaced (since the boat was new) or the engine was replaced and it originally had a V-6 or inline 6 etc..... you may have the wrong ratio gears in the drive.

That will make it hard to select the correct prop to start with.

Also, if the engine is NOT timed properly, you might not generate enough power to get the boat to plane either...

Once you determine you have the right ratio drive, you can use any of the numerous prop selectors on the net. Most prop shops have historical prop selection info on older boats too.....

In general, (if the engine is otherwise in good running condition, correct drive installed, and the boat is not overloaded) you should "prop" the boat to achieve "rated" max RPM at wide open throttle (WOT).
Here's a good prop-slip calculator and there's a lot of info there that help you make a choice http://www.go-fast.com/Prop_Slip_Calculator.htm

Regards,

Rick
