I have a 1989 bayliner w/force 85-90hp powerhead and force outdrive. When I try to start it, the steering wheel turns and the motor won't spin. Then when I turn the steering wheel, the flywheel turns??? I took off the lower unit and the problem still exists. Does anyone know what the problem might be???

I'm trying to reason this one out.It seems to me the bottom of the crank must be seized in the top of the leg.

Pictures may be helpful in helping someone here help you better, or if no pictures, is this and outboard, inboard outboard or L-Drive setup?

This is an L-Drive. Is there a clutch or clutch spring between the powerhead and the drive unit??????????????

Not familar with the L-Drive, use the search feature at the top of the page type in L-Drive see what you can find there.

Or find yourself an L-Drive service manual on ebay possibly, my Clymer manual covers the L-Drive also but I've never studied it so I don't know how in depth it goes. Good luck! Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Found the bearing and shaft in the section between the powerhead and the lower unit, whatever it's called, seized up. However I was able to get it apart. Time to buy some more parts!!! What may have let water get into that area? The bellow, and seals all look good??? Any ideas?

The water could have come from anywhere. These units were only produced for a short time(very poor engineering) and we that were lucky enough to work on them didn't call them L-drives but Hell-drives.Good luck. Jerry

I can't believe no one in here gets what is wrong with this boat. Every one of you should have your man cards rejected. The leads for the starter and the hydrolics for the stearing are switched on the relay. duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, none of us here are geniuses but I can't believe you have an attitude-- Learn a little before you write: When the bearings in the midsection bind, the engine torque (or in this case, the starter motor torque) is delivered to the lower unit (instead of the propshaft) and tries to turn it: check the most obvious first--Simple!

Frank nicely put sir.... Sometimes intelligence escapes the intelligent I guess. Genious, I?m curious, where did you receive all of your astounding powers of deduction and reason? Truly, I'm impressed.
Also, if I may be so bold, where did you learn to spell words that attempt to pass as English vernacular?
Sometimes, it is better to remain thought of as a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt.
As far as the "revocation of the man card".... you have to be issued one first.
