Re: 1989 capri 2.7 i/o

I'd start looking at a fuel issue. Clogged filter, crap in the carb, etc. If it were electrical I don't think it would come and go like that but checking your coil also would't be a bad idea. Coils are pretty cheap for those little 4 bangers. Might just change it out anyway.
How old is the gas you're using? Have you added any stabilizer to it?
There's my $.02

thanks gc for the reply i cleaned the tank out and put fresh gas in it just before
i took the boat out a couple of weekends ago i also put a new filter and a fuel/water separate on it and also have taken the carb apart and cleaned it
i was thinking maybe it has a sticky valve but im going to change the coil out also to to be sure its not there

Make sure the breather tube on your fuel tank is not clogged. That will cause exactly what you are describing. If that checks out okay, try a carb rebuild. It doesn't cost much ($15 in parts) to do it yourself, and it always seems to pep a tired boat up, no matter how well you think it is running. If you opt for the carb rebuild, pay close attention to the float height, as it may be set too low and running out of gas in the bowl.

my 5.0 V8 was sputtering really bad at full throttle...it acted like it was flooding itself out. I put a new fuel pump on it, nope. rebuilt the carb, nope. took it to the shop, all it needed was points, condenser, and the timing was off. now she runs as good as new again.
