1989 evinrude 200 VRO disconnect/electronic fuel pump

I have completely removed my VRO on an 89 200 evinrude and have plugged the pulse hose and added an electronic fuel pump. Now the motor seems to be running fine. Can anyone tell me if this will cause me problems in the long run or if it is fine. Also this motor runs great except when at a low speed idle or in reverse. At these times, the motor will sound like it is missing and will die. It then will start right back up. Any input would be greatly appriciated.

If you used the search for "electric fuel pump", you would see many threads about using an electric fuel pump on an outboard. The overwhelming consensus is that it is a bad idea, based on safety concerns due to the fact that the electric pump will not automatically shut off if the engine stalls or floods.

Agreed. Most disable the VRO simply by plugging the oil line and disconnecting the electrical connection at the VRO pump, which should work fine.

I tried to disconnect/plug the oil line and run mixed gas through the vro, however it would still not run above idle. Once I did away with the VRO completely It worked fine. Could this be do to a bad diaphram in the VRO? Or a faulty vaccum switch? Thanks

How would I go about completely bypassing the VRO w/o an electric fuel pump? Is there a pump out there that I can install that is driven with the pulse hose? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Yes, there is a proper vacuum driven premix pump out there. I'm sure someone will answer with a part number for the 200 HP, but keep bumping up this post until someone replies.

Sure, it's possible the vacuum switch has a bad diaphragm and is letting air in. To check for that disconnect the fuel line from the vacuum switch and plug it with a bolt of the appropriate size.

I'd put the VRO back on, prime the oil line, keep running premix to confirm the oil usage and find out why you're not getting enough fuel. Running off a portable tank would be the first thing I'd try.
