Hello all,
New to the boat scene and trying to gain whatever knowledge I can about my motor. Like I mentioned in the title it is a 1989 Evinrude 20Hp Serial # E20CRCEM. I am in the process of ordering mechanical steering and am lost when it comes to throttle controls?? I know I have to get the specific throttle/shift cables but do I have to buy an engine specific throttle control as well? do I need the throttle control to have the red wire harness on it for this model motor like i've seen with 25hp model? Any help I can get on this matter will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

I think you just need to make sure and count the pins in the big red plug, I think they have a few different model control boxes for several different sizes, so get the correct number of pins, and you should be alright. the rest of the control box throttle/shift is fairly universal in hooking up cables etc. good luck

If you use the original OMC/OEM cables for throttle and shift, you will need a control unit that is also compatible with them. That usually means OMC although there are some aftermarket control units that fit with a connector kit.

Using an aftermarket control unit usually means using "universal" type cables, and correct connection kits for engine or both ends.
