Hi,

A month ago I bought a 1989 Evinrude 25hp 2-stroke outboard (electric start) with controls. The model # is E25ELCEB.

The motor did not come with the proper warning buzzer, so the mechanic I got it from just put in another one that didn?t fit within the control box (it was actually hanging outside the box by the wires).

When I got home, I got on ebay and found the right-sized warning buzzer for the 1990 version of my motor. It fit fine in the control box, but the wires had a plug at the end ? and there is no place in the control box for this plug to go. (for what it?s worth, according to a diagram tha I saw online, the 1989 buzzer has a plug too)

I figured for the $10 I spent on the buzzer, I?d just clip the wires and marry them up with the control box wires with electrical caps. However, after clipping and stripping a bit of the wires (purple and tan), I found that the metal wires themselves appear to be both copper and aluminum ? and unfortunately, the wires don?t match up properly.

That is, in order for me to match up my purple and tan wires from the buzzer to their twins in the control box, I would have to connect copper to aluminum. The control box as 2 purple wires and one tan one. The new buzzer has a purple wire and a tan/blue wire. The old buzzer just had two terminals that the 3 control box wires connected to.

To be clear, I am ASSUMING that the silver-colored wiring is aluminum, but I really don?t know for sure. I hope that makes sense.

I have heard a lot of different things when it comes to marrying-up copper and aluminum wiring ? most of it not good. But then, most the online articles and chatter from people pertains to wiring a house, and not an OMC control box.

Any suggestions? Do you think I can go ahead and wire up the purple/purple and tan/tan wires together without worrying about the copper and aluminum that are on the inside? I?d appreciate any input.

Thanks a bunch,
Mike in Tacoma

That's not aluminum wire, it's tinned copper, which is a high quality wire. What type of connectors are you planning to use? Sounds like maybe wire nuts (?) I'd either solder them and put 2 layers of heat shrink over the solder joint, or else use a waterproof butt splice.

thanks for the tip - I'll give the butt splice a try first!
