The boat previously had a suzuki so now i'm switching all the controls. I need to know what these two 3-wire connectors go to. I know the rectangular one is for the trim/tilt but what does it connect to? model of engine is E70ELCEM. i included a pic of the actual controls as well incase that helps. thanks

Well first one looks to be for the tilt and trim switch given that it looks to have red, blue, & green wires. Can't tell on the second one as the colors are washed out in the picture and don't even know what your trying to show in the third. More explanation of wire colors and location and where the cable is going might help.

Re: 1989 evinrude 70 wiring

i know the first one is for the trim/tilt, as stated in the original post. it comes out the side of the control lever.

the second one is black, white, and gray. it comes out of the ignition portion of the control box.

the third is just a picture of the control box incase that gives anyone any better idea of what i'm working with here, as stated in the original post.

Re: 1989 evinrude 70 wiring

Sorry, have a headache and just read your whole post. Was hoping to edit mine before you saw it.

Tilt & trim cable from control connects to tilt and trim wiring harness that goes to motor. Second connector I think is for tachometer which is what the grey wire is. The black would be the ground wire. The white I'm not sure as on mine it is purple and would be used to power the dash gauges when the ignition key is on. One thought is the white wire may be for a engine over-temp warning horn, which I seem to remember it was for on my previous controls. Wire would go to ground when over-temp sensor trips.

Additional info. Tilt and trim cable is separate from the engine control cable and also has a connector on the engine end for the T&T sensor and on the other end has 2 wires with ring terminals for the T&T gauge. Hope this helps.

square is trim n tilt.

round is for a tach, you plug the tach led into it.

thanks guys. sounds like i'm missing the harness that goes from the controls back to the motor for the trim/tilt.

I have purchased several from EBAY in the past. Greatlakesskipper has been a good source there, although there shipping is always a little high.

BTW, take a look on your engine for a white wire. That should help determine its function.

can you elaborate on that thing about the white wire?

Buy a manual on the motor if you are planning on keeping it. It'll tell you exactly how that schematic lays out.

Looked at the schematics I have for that motor and can't determine what the white wire is for. The gray and black are as stated before. Looks like you have a top mount control and I only have diagrams for side mount ones. For them as is on mine the white wire would be a purple one instead which is at 12vdc only when the key switch is on and is used to power the gauges on the dash (not the gauge lights). Can only suggest you measure the voltage on the white wire with the key switch off and then on. Maybe it serves the same purpose as the purple wire does on side mount controllers. Best I can do, sorry.

Re: 1989 evinrude 70 wiring

look all around a wire when trying to figure its color, sometimes with the twist you dont see a STRIPE of another color on the wire.

many wires have a solid color and then a stripe... I have looked at many wires and had to look three or more times before i actually saw the stripe on the wire!!

did you order a harness??

not much we can do for you until you get the harness.

when you get the harness, it should be plug and play...so it wont matter what color the wires really are.

you need a harness similar to this:

realized this motor either wasn't originally equipped with trim/tilt, or it's been removed. what do i need to convert it?
