So here it is ladies and gentleman. I've bought the book, I've read the posts but I'm still having difficulties. I purchased this motor at the beginning of the summer, had it out three times and the water pump goes out. Of course. Everyone talks about a screw connecting the shift bar to the shifting mechanism. I don't have a screw, mine is just a pin. Maybe it was a screw that has become decapitated. No clue. Anyway, I need it out. I tried using a long skinny piece of steel but it won't sit on the pin. It just slides off when I hit it with a hammer. Could it be a screw with no head? Anything would help. I just got this motor and I want to take my boat out a couple more times before the summer is up. Thank you to anyone who can help.

This thing has a clevis clip on the starboard side of the engine. Located on end of shifter shaft that the shift cable connects to. Remove clip push inward on the shaft, pin will release shift rod lower unit. Funny you trying to drive the pin out. The first one I did was try and drill the pin out, burns the tips off of the bits, after 3 bits, I looked in OEM manual found removal instructions, looked around to make sure no one was watching me.

Thank you for your reply. I'm actually at work and I'm trying to get this all figured out in mind. The clip you talk of... Is it the one that connects the rocker arm looking thing to the shift rod? Or is it the "R" looking clip that is closer to the shift and throttle cables on the farthest starboard side? Because those are the only one's I know of. Do you know what I'm referring to? By the way, love panama city, go once a year. Stay at the Summit on the beach and eat at the IHOP.

If you have an 89' Evinrude 88spl and you need to get the lower unit off... This for you. It doesn't look like it'd work but it freakin does. If I come down to Panama, I owe claton money for his awesomeness.
