I have a 1989 60hp Evinrude. The motor runs fine on muffs, but when on the water it dies when placed in gear. Does anyone have any ideas why.

idle set too low. low compression, should idle in gear 600-750 rpm, in the water.

There is no exhaust back pressure when the engine is running on muffs so setting the idle that way results in what you experiencing when you put it in the water. Higher back pressures slows the engine to the point where it won't idle.

I checked the compression of the motor, and it was 120,90, 60. What are some causes of low compression. Could this mean that the head gasket is blown. The motor runs great like I said on muffs, and when I put it in gear while on muffs, it stays running, I can take the motor to a higher rpm, but when I put it on the lake, it dies,
