I have several problems, with my motor and I am seeking assistance: (1) The Serial Number & Model Number label is weather-worn and the numbers can't be read. (2) I have to replace the starter and need advice on which is the better course to take, replace with new, replace with rebuilt, or rebuild myself. (3) The motor has periods when it won't plane out. My fishing buddy, down in MS stated that "the water was heavy, down there". It runs quite well, with just me on the boat. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
If the starter needs brushes and brush plate go for it. If the armature is burnt, I'd put in a new one. Pending a good running motor.
Check the compression, it needs to be even and about 150#. The fuel pump may need to be rebuilt, squeese the primer bulb when it acts
up to see if it runs faster if it does then the pump diaphram or check valve is bad if you don't have any leaks in the hose or fittings.
The spark plugs should be the same color on the tips and not to much baked on carbon.
If this motor gets run slow alot run some engine cleaner through it to de-carbon it.
It may be as simple as putting a 1 inch pitch
smaller prop on the motor to give it more power as it runs good with just you in the boat.

Thanks for the prompt and informative reply. I'll give your suggestions a try because, even though the weather is about to turn cold, here in St. Louis, there are still other parts of the country that I can fish in. :) :)
