1989 Force 125 Bored .30 over NOT RUNNING RIGHT! Please Help!!

Okay guys. I have been reading on here for weeks and I found nothing pertaining to the problems I am having with my boat/motor. I really hope someone will be able to help me. I will list everything that was done to the motor then tell you what exactly it is doing?

1989 Maxum Cuddy Cabin 19.5??
1989 Force 125
Bored .30 over
All new seals and gaskets
Carburetors were taken apart soaked overnight and rebuilt
New reed valves
New thermostat
All new hardware (grade 8 bolts)
Motor was put back together with anaerobic sealant
New starter
New fuel pump
All new fuel lines & ball

I am getting excellent compression across all 4 cylinders
Great spark across all four coils
TDC is right on point

Okay, after setting everything to the manufactures specifications as per the shop manual, the motor will not run properly:

The link for the carburetors is set properly and they are in sync.
Timing is set for the prestolite magneto system.
The two hash marks on the throttle adjustment are in the center of the roller.
One full turn out for the air mixture screw, then I found the sweet spot on each

The motor will fire right up, idle perfectly, run perfectly, throttle up perfectly BUT I max out at:
20-25 MPH 4000-4400 RPM

MOTOR WILL RUN 5000-5100 RPM 30-32 MPH WHEN I DO THE FOLLOWING: (but after throttling down I get severe engine chatter & idle stays 1500-2000 RPM for about 60 seconds, than slowly comes down).

Advance the timing 3/8?? further than the last timing mark on the flywheel. (the mark on the right)
Bring Idle adjustment down a little bit
Same Air adjustment

The previous owner said the boat used to go 40MPH @ 5500RPM (before rebuild, boat was not running properly when I bought the boat so we overhauled it).

I was thinking since I bored it, it should do somewhere around 40-45 @ 5500-6000RPM ?

-Thank you in advance!

Sounds like the timing is off. Did you do static timing or just set it acording to the flywheel?J

What size prop are you running?

Go to Harbor Freight and buy four spark plug testers. Put them on the engine and have someone watch them as you are running.

From the rpm and speed you are getting, it seems like one cylinder is not pulling its load.

Timing was set according to manufactures specifications as per manual. (WOT in the water, moving (not recommended for safety reasons))

Thanks for the reply

The prop pitch is not fresh on my mind, I will double check that today when I go down to the dock and I will update you with that information later.

Thanks!

Mark,

If you have no trim, what hole do you put your engine trim pin in? If you are running with a light load, it should be in position 2. If that is where it is, try position 3 and report back.

John

I have hydraulic trim. After getting up on plane, I trim to maximize RPM, speed, & comfort.

Might be a tad over propped. 19.5 ft boat with that hull design. According to what I can find on line, your Maxum should weight in at around 1600 to 1900 pounds. If you have access to a 17 pitch prop, it would be interesting to test with it. Maybe some of the more experienced folks can chime in with their thoughts.

Hey John,
I think you may be on to something...
I went to Harbor Freight today after work and picked up the spark testers. After installing all 4, AND making sure none of them were arching off of anything, here is what I found:

LISTED FROM THE TOP TO BOTTOM

Cylinder 1: Bright & alive PURPLE flash at high and low RPM

Cylinder 2: Bright & alive PURPLE flash at high and low RPM

Cylinder 3: Bright & alive ORANGE-ISH/AMBER color at low RPM Occasional PURPLE at Higher RPM but never a consistent PURPLE flash at high and/or low RPM

Cylinder 4: Bright & alive ORANGE-ISH/AMBER color at low RPM Occasional PURPLE at Higher RPM but never a consistent PURPLE flash at high and/or low RPM

Thanks,

Mark,

First, clean the gounds for the two coils and also check the clip in the plug elbow. I have seen some really rusted.

If that doesn't help, the problem can be the CDI module or stator. The stator can be ohmed out with an ohm meter to see if you have a bad coil.
As for the CDI modules, the #3 and #4 both run off of the same CDI unit. Swap the two units and see if it changes things.

Let me know what transpires.

I had this boats brother, a Maxum walk thru 19.5', 1989 same motor.. It had same prop and ran very well with good compression 140#'s. max rpm's with 2 adults and 1/2 tank of gas was 4500-4600. At one point I had an 85 hp lower unit with different gears (lower) and it would turn 5500 rpm with same prop.

The prop should be correct.

A drop to a 17 pitch prop should give you @ 400 rpm but you will lose top end speed. I don't think the prop pitch is the issue.

My boat is a cuddy cabin and the front does weigh a lot more than an open bow though...

Maybe something to consider in the future after we get it running properly.

Thanks for the reply!

Mark,

Before buying a prop, go to the prop forum and ask some questions. There are engineers there that have a program that will tell you what prop you should have on your boat.

John,
I could not check what you asked me to check; it has been raining off and on all day. I will try tomorrow, it looks like sun all day long.

John,
I went down to the boat after work yesterday. I cleaned all of the grounds and checked again. Same result.
After pulling off the rack of electrical components & checking all of the clips, I noticed 2 wires that had the insulation melted and the wire exposed. (one was the main feed going to coil 4 and the other wire was the white wire coming from across the top of the motor, underneath the flywheel going to the ignition modules. I repaired the wires with some electrical tape, started the motor and observed the spark checkers again. 1, 2 & 3 were purple but 4 was still orange. Also, 4 is hardly noticeable at idle but as soon as you give it gas it brightens up (still orange though). I tried swapping coils 4 &2 (and wires) around to see if it was the coil but I was getting the same colors on both after the swap.
I didn?t get off of work until late so by this time I was running out of daylight and I couldn?t switch the ignition modules. I am going to switch them around today but I was thinking though, since everything else in that motor in new, I should just get all new electrical components; (stator, 4 coils and 2 ignition modules). I don?t want to run into any future problems with my electrical system and I would feel better if everything was new. Please let me know what you think.
Thanks,
Mark
