1989 Force 50 HP outboard engine question

I just bought an '88 Crest pontoon with an 89 Force 50 HP outboard by US Marine. I don't know anything about engines so I hope I didn't buy a project! I test drove the boat with the previous owner before buying it and the exhaust holes shot out a stream of water when running. I started the boat in my driveway today in a full bucket of water. I covered the intake holes. Water sputtered out of the two round exhaust holes near the top of the engine. It increased slightly as the engine warmed up in idle but it never put out a full stream of water like it did during my test drive in the lake. Of course the engine wasn't revved up the same today as it was during the test drive. I kept my hand in the sputtering water coming out of the exhaust holes and it was warm but not boiling hot. Is the engine or impeller pump working correctly? Thanks

OOPS! I double posted by accident. I walked away from my computer for awhile after posting and then when I returned, the forum log in screen was active so I assumed my last post didn't go through because I wasn't logged in. Sorry.

You are lucky you got water flowing when not in a lake. Many people here including myself will not get water flowing on muffs, the whole lower unit must be in some sort of bucket as you have done. I use a trash can for my force 85 horse. I get more water flow when in the lake at full throttle also. The bucket/trash can method is a good indicator if your system is working. To me it sounds like it is working pretty good. However to be on the safe side a impeller cost $15, thats cheap and worth every penny to put your mind at ease. There is a good thread to walk you through the changing yourself.

change plugs too, run sea foam through the motor also...sea foam mixes in with your gas/oil mix (50:1) and found at wal mart...
