I have a Capri 1700 with a 1989 Force 85 HP. Motor runs, but maxed out at about 27 MPH and would stall at WOT. Did a compression test and cylinder #2 has no compression. Honestly, is it worth fixing? I have a mechanic friend that would help me out and not charge me labor, but I'm thinking this needs a complete rebuild. Does anyone have any idea how much it might cost in parts to get this thing fixed? Is this a lost cause? Thanks.

FIRST: Pull th head to see if the head gasket is OK. If the head gasket is faulty, then only 40 bucks to replace it is necessary. HOWEVER: If the cylinder is scored, then a rebore and oversized piston is necessary.

This requires disassembling the engine with about 10 hours labor, 45-60 bucks for the boreing, and about 125-150 for the piston. You do not need to replace all the pistons, only the defective one (s).

If only the piston is damaged and the cylinder is NOT scored, then the piston)s) csan be replaced without disassembling the engine.

Thanks Frank. As soon as I get the chance, I'll pull the head for a better look. I'll post my results. --Bill
