1989 Force125 idling/stalling

I'm new to this great site and have found many of you with the same problem but would like to hear if anyone came up with the golden cure! The problem's like this; once the motor is idling it will go in /out of gear ok, but after a slow run it will stall when going for reverse, the motor is great normally (hot and cold)runs ok flat out but appears to me to be too rich inbetween idle and half throttle with lots of misfires/chugging/smoke causing plugs to oil up once on a cold motor but never as yet on a hot one ,I think this is what is then causing motor to stall when returning to the dock(which as you know is good fun!!).On our lake you have a speed limit in certain areas which doesn't help.I now open it up every so often when in the 6mph limit to clear its throat and this helps the chugging.I don't want to mess with the carb settings until seeking advice as i dont want to see the crank thru the pistons!! I don't know the history of the motor as its a recent buy.

The idle mixture setting is about 3/4 turn out from the seat. On mine its 1/2 turn. Note where your settings are, you can alwys return to them. A little leaner and you should raise the rpm and avoid the stalling...............Later do a decarbonization.

On a good carb, the manual calls for 1 turn from slightly seated on the idle mixture.<br />I would error on the side of rich, as runnin too lean will slowly destroy your engine.<br />Sure, it would foul plugs quickly, but let it.<br />BTW, that's the first thing to do, change the plugs, if it has more than 80hours on them.<br />Run a compression test, as this is a symptom of low compression.<br />And Sony2001 is right on about the decarb.If you have low compression,it can sometimes bring it back. And decarb every time juist before you change plugs,at 80 hours. If you idle more than normal, even more frequently.

Thanks for the info,I bought the boat/engine from a dealer who "said" he checked the compression/changed the plugs,he has a good name so i hope he did. The motor will idle in neutral ok,its only after coming in from a slow run that it stalls when going for reverse. I will check carb settings soon and let you know what the results are.

Hi all,<br />Thanks for all the info,I ran the motor in a tank last night and weakened the mixture from 1.5 turns to 1 and it seems to run a lot better although I've yet to try it on the lake.<br />Problem is when your looking closely at things you look too hard and find other problems!!<br />I've now noticed oil weeping from the lower end vents and a cracked transom bracket!! Funny how the warranty ran out last week!!

thanks for all the help guys,it ran great this weekend,dead smooth and no stalling,suprising what less than 1/2 a turn on the mixtures can do!<br />Thanks
