Are you sure we are looking at the same Cut in the hull ? ..or are there 2 cuts ?

Just asking because in the last pic of the First set of pics ( from the original First set ) look to between your Chine and your first Strake .. But from the cleaned up Inside pics in your latest set it looks like the cut in right in the strake/chine area ..

Are there two Cuts that went through ? .. poke a zip tie from the outside and see if its the same cut..

It is definitely one cut. What looks like a second cut must be from grinding this are.

Your making great progress! I take it your using all of the proper safety equipment Good Respirator (full face is best) Tyvek suit, gloves etc.

Just keep checking back to my thread and look at the pics so you have something to follow... You will grind the glass down till its smooth and clean looking.... you don't want heavy built up or uneven spots......It will help the glass to lay better later

Cleaned her out last night. I was not able anymore to see what I was doing. Here are some pictures how she looks right now. I still don't know what I should do with the port stringer. Any ideas how to sister joint this are the proper way?

This is how I would recommend building your sister joint.
Cut an approximate 60 degree angle on the stringer with a hand or jigsaw. Do the same on the Stinger piece. Set it in place and match em up as best you can and clamp em in place drill a 1/2 inch hole at and angle into the top of the replacement stringe and down into the existing one. You will then have to measure and mark a hole for the bottom section as best you can. USE Gorilla Glue It has great gap filling properites and is 100% waterproof Glue the dowels in and the mating surfaces and spritz with water to activate the glue. Glue and clamp the sister pieces onto the side with about a twelve inch overlap from the joints. 12 Hours later your good to go. Resin and glass it up. Heres a drawing

^Scarf joint is a good idea. As a tip, if you go this route, when you cut the angle and mate the two pieces together, they tend to slip "backwards", so glue the very tip a little past the cut line and then sand down once it's all dry. Been using scarf joints on guitar necks for a while and it's one of the strongest joints you can make in wood anyway.

In case you're interested, Here's how I recommend you do your Stringers
Build em outside the boat and cover em in CSM first. Put the PL Premium Adhesive on the bottom edge and let it set for a couple of hour till it firm but not fully cured. that way it won't all squish out on you when you install em. Use 1/4" wood spacers to hold the strings off the hull and then tab em in with the 1.5oz CSM when the tabs are dry REMOVE the SPACERS. and fill the voids with more PL Premium. Then Fillet and Lam with 1708. There are other methods, that's just how I recommend doing it. Here's a drawing that helps demonstrate it.

I just reached a big step in my restoration project.(most likely a small one for you guys) I finally got the wood out underneath the walkthrough. Now back to more grinding, after I picked up my daughter form school. Pics will come up tonight (I guess).

Wow, another hole in the hull. This time its 2" in diameter perfectly round. It is from my old through hull transducer. The PO cut the cable of it and left it alone. Well I just touched it and it fell out of the hull. I guess this time the hole is a good hole. Does anyone know of a good through hull transducer with a 2" shaft?

Do you guys think that the surface is good enough for glass? There is some foam left at the front stringers, I will remove that. Does anyone know what kind of through hull transducer that is?

looks GREAT bud !

it is common to cut loose a transducer and leave it.

do you want one?...if so...now is the time.

as far as the glass.....make sure you vaccume the very front.....get all the dust out!
then turn the vaccume on blow and do it again.....if you have "air" blow the whole thing.

the way to tell if you are ready for glass, is when the resin rich (1/8th) layer is off the top and you are at the glass....you are looking for glass on glass.
dont get too anal about this....even a good rugh and scuff will work. "ell, poly will stick to old resin....but the best is if you are just thru the top.

acetone the area fully after you are done your vaccuming and about to glass.
some use a cloth with styrene to kind of "activate or wake up" the old resin....if you dont have any dont worry.

if you have spent a lot of time grinding on a section....you will need to replace that glass....even a 1.5 is great......1708 is over kill and will add weight.

IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO RE FOAM
and the hull is very flexible, and you are worried to walk on it...
a full 1708 wrap will do just fine (csm first).
other wise a full wrap of 1708 will just add un necessary weight.

the big regal is about to receive its final run up tune and hour a motor tommorow,
so after thats done....i might be able to get back on here for a bit.


(the owner of the shop is gone.....lol....he was gonna pour a hunderd bux worth of gas into the big regal.....he had drained the tank....but did not blow it out with air....lol....i told him i was gonna blow the thank before i fueled the boat.....he got mad cause he wanted to start the motors....i blew the tank....and 5 gallons of salt water came out mixed with some fuel......i just saved him about 3 weeks of playing with water seperators.....lol.....he was happy....but the ground and motor cage was so filled with gas vapors he did not want to test the motors....so he went home and i have a few minits on iboats relaxing.)

I would patch the transducer hole and use "shoot thru the hull transducer. You loose a bit of signal (very little), but I just hate the thought of a hole in my hull that I don't have to have...

I agree, any hole below the waterline, unless its for a livewell is NOT a good idea, IMHO

I will clean her tomorrow when I got part of the port stinger out. There is not a lot of room to work so we will see how much of the stringer I can get out underneath the bow.

I don't like the thought of a hole in my hull either, but I guess that will get over my glass work skills.

even though a thru hull hole is "scary" it happens all the time...with succpers on larger boats...waste disposalls.....ect ect.

just make SURE YOU KNOW IT SEALED and sleep well.

Your doing a great job on the prep work

I agree that the hole for the transducer should be glassed over and go with a shoot thru hull or a conventional one on the transom.

You have some of iboats best guys with you on your resto so no worries!
