Ezeke - you out there? Got my parts in today... New seats look good no outer metal part.... Screen and diaphram looks good....... The thermostats are in a sealed genuine evinrude johnson genuine parts bag with part number 434137 printed on it, but they are white in color... how do I tell if they are the updated superseding part?

The new 434137 are shaped like the one in the iboats ad but are now white in color, the aftermarket ones are black.

The original ones were white but had an elongated snout.

Thanks - looks like I got the right thing! - How bout the diaphram? what side do i screw the t-stat onto? I think the old ones were in wrong. My Johnson book is not real clear....does the protruding ring part of the diaphram go into the head or into the t-stat cover? also the little bleed hole? how should that be oriented?

Re: 1989 Johnson 200 looper cooling problem

Update: new thermostats and water intake screen completed. Still running HOT.... runs cool at or below 2000 RPM... Above 2000 RPM temperature climbs... checked water control valve and plumbing all good! After having the lower unit off this weekend to put the new intake screen in, I think I found the root cause of the problems.... The end of the water tube is a bit distorted and does not fit tight enough or deep enough into the rubber sleeve in the water pump thus causing low water pressure. The new plan 1) put in a new temp gauge just to verify temps 2) put a water pressure gauge on the boat (does not have one) 3) if low water pressure and temp are verified, I am going to pull the powerhead and replace the cooling tube...... Sound like a good plan? Anyone have a reccomendation on water pressure guage kit and or temperature guage kit and sender? Also if I end up pulling the power head, I know I need a water tube, grommet and power head gasket... what other seals / gaskets should I need?

first i would VERIFY that the temperature that your gauge tells you is indeed correct.
get a infrared temp gun.
point it at the cylinderhead Top.
i know a lot of gauges are not accurate.

2000 RPM is the point at which your water control valve is supposed to change the water flow for extra cooling, so it sounds as though it is not working.

Thanks for the info - The water control valve us working correctly - I am looking at new temp gauges - what would you reccommend? Water temp gauge? Or cylinder head temp guage?

Re: 1989 Johnson 200 looper cooling problem

Your cylinder heads have pre-drilled and pre-threaded holes for the senders for the gauges. You can use OE or Teleflex, they work the same. Just be sure to buy the kit with the matching sender and not just the gauge. If you want to read both cylinder heads, you will need a switch and an extra sender, or two gauges.

Use thermal compound.

Thanks - Are the predrilled holes into the water jacket? Or just into the head?

They are in blind holes in the cylinder heads as shown in the second diagram in the Teleflex flier. None of the OMC outboards have the temp sender actually in the water.

Re: 1989 Johnson 200 looper cooling problem

ive had some tough ones in my many yrs as an omc tec but ive never had a omc that I couldnt get apart I did have a 20hp merc that did beat me tho, dont loose your head work on it for an hr or so then walk away that way you wont take a hammer to it, is the drive shaft stuck in the head ? if not you should be able to break it down if you have taken or broke off all the bolts, on your prev posts I thought you said that you had the foot off if so then it should come apart. do you have any pics that I could look at
