Just purchased this boat / engine. Engine runs OK, but does not charge. Stator looks like stator has been Hot and the "varnish" has been melted off. I am going to relace the stator, but am wondering what caused this? Any ideas on what to look for? Could it have been a junk battery?

Sometimes the stator is damaged when a rectifier goes bad. The diode wiring fuses in the rectifier potting, allowing the battery voltage to flow to the ignition components and damage them.

The heavy 35 amp water cooled rectifier can go bad very quickly if the water supply is not sufficient to cool it, and it is certainly subject to all of the other ways to kill rectifiers.

Hmm sounds like I need to replace the stator and rectifier... There goes 600 bucks...... I would hate to put a new stator in and have it burn up.... Any way to check the rectifier?

I priced those parts with a CDI replacement and came in under $500. I highly recommend CDI Electronic parts. Parts seem to be well made and they offer support, which I will say was probably the best customer support experience I have ever had. I need to apply for a job with them...lol

Hey guys, dont ya think your jumping to conclusions a lil early ?

all we know right now is
a. it doesnt charge
b. the varnish has oozed around. (which is not un-typical of a 20 year part)

prudence says you would (using an ohm-meter)
a. test the rectifier then
b. test the stator
c. test the battery
d. test grounds
